INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Publishing, Journalism and Communication Studies is committed to the development of manpower for both local and regional book publishing industries as well as the wider world of print and non–print media. It trains skilled manpower capable of working in the traditional book publishing sector as well as other areas such as newspaper and magazine reporting and publishing, electronic media, public relations firms, producing company newsletters and reports and print-based sectors of the marketing and advertising industries etc.

Aim

AIM

The aim of the department is to provide an educational background that prepares students for a career in publishing and its related industries. The department recognises that modern society is sustained and progresses through the creation, organisation and dissemination of recorded knowledge and that the skills, techniques and tools of information provision are becoming common ground between information professionals. The department therefore works very closely with the other two departments of the school to ensure that students develop skills relevant to a wide range of related information professions. .

Programmes

COURSES OFFERED

The courses offered in the department of Publishing and Media Studies cover the publishing process from authorship through editorial, production, marketing and distribution to retail selling. The history of mass media, printing and the technological changes over the years, are also taught.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the school who have specialised in publishing and media studies are equipped with a wide range of highly marketable academic and practical skills. Not only do they gain valuable expertise in the gathering, organisation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information, but they also learn the profession of information presentation and mass production, in the form of books, magazines, newspapers, and ephemeral printed material.

The impact of information technology in the industry has meant that new opportunities exist both in the publication of electronic products and the application of this technology to more traditional publishing. The desktop publishing skills inculcated during the course give the students an even greater choice of career. Previous graduates have, for example, found employment as editors, designers and production and marketing persons in traditional book publishing companies, as newspaper reporters and editors, as editors and designers with magazine publishers, as public relations persons in institutions, and as lecturers in academic institutions.

We aim to produce highly–qualified information professionals ready to contribute to the dynamic world of publishing in its widest form. The curriculum is continuously revised to meet the demands of a very dynamic market.

INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Library, Records Management & Information Studies was established at the beginning of 2005/2006 academic year in accordance with the restructuring of academic programmes as recommended in the Moi University strategic plan 2004/2005 – 2013/2014.

The former departments of Library and Information Studies established in 1989 and Archives and Records Management established in 1991 merged to form the new department of Library, Records Management & Information Studies. It is one of the three departments that constitute the School of Information Sciences. The other two departments are Publishing and Media Studies, and Information Technology.

Vision and Mission

VISION:

The vision of the department is in line with that of the School of Information Sciences namely to be recognized internationally as a centre of excellence in Information Sciences.

MISSION:

TThe mission of the department is in line with that of the School of Information Sciences namely to offer education and training by developing high-level manpower for the management of information systems, services and resources in the country through practical and development oriented programmes, research, continuing education programmes and community-based information activities.

Further the department seems to:

Produce highly qualified information professionals in librarianship, documentation, records and archives management, information systems management and knowledge management.

Pursue excellence in teaching, research and scholarship in library, records management and information studies.

Produce professional leadership in the information profession in the country through research, consultancy services and organization and participation in continuing education programmes and services to community.

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of the department are to:

Equip students with relevant information and knowledge management skills necessary in the management of information systems and services.

Provide students with a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for planning and promoting the free flow of information in a rapidly changing society.

Offer continuing education programme courses to all levels of practicing information professionals through seminars, workshops, conferences in order to keep abreast with new knowledge, skills, practices and attitudes in the profession.

Improve the professional standard and status of information professionals by providing professional leadership and participation in professional activities.

Engage in development and consultancy activities and services by providing expertise to the private and public sectors of the economy.

Conduct research on topical issues in library and information studies, records and archives management and disseminate findings through journal publications, workshops, seminars and conferences and extension services.

Welcome to the Department of Information Technology

We offer programmes tailored towards providing IT students with relevant knowledge and practical skills that enables them to take appropriate professional and leadership positions in Information and Communication Technology upon their graduation. Our curricula are regularly reviewed to meet the emerging technological trends and demands from the research and industry. We regularly review our curricula to cater for emerging technological trends. The department endeavors to generate the necessary IT manpower for both local and global markets.

MISSION

The mission of the Department of Information Technology is to conceive and design courses that enhance and support effective organisational information management. The department considers effective management of information assets and resources as critical to successful organisational performance, innovativeness and competitive edge.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The department aims to produce individuals capable of:

To facilitate the school to graduate at least 80% of final year students into the job market and ensure 80% of continuing students successfully progress to the next level each year.
To produce at least 3 publications in internationally refereed journals and 2 conference proceedings in an academic year.
To maintain at least one linkage with similar institution and/or industry.
