BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MEDIA SCIENCE
Introduction
Bachelor of Science in Media Science degree programme is designed to produce competent media professionals to work in the print and the electronic media industry. The course is tailored to produce graduates who can work in the field and also be effective managers of media institutions. This course has been developed and designed to meet increased demand for personnel with specialised skills and knowledge in the various aspects of the media industry. Teaching methods consist of lectures, seminars, practicals, written assignments, project work, field visits, individual reading, research, problem solving and practical attachment. The practical teaching uses equipment commonly used in the media industry.
Objectives of the Programme
The programme seeks to:
- Introduce students to current thought and practice in media science work;
- provide basic professional education and training in specific fields of media science so as to develop persons who are capable of operating in a dynamic media field;
- acquaint students with the principles of management of media systems and services;
- equip students with necessary knowledge and skills needed to respond intelligently to issues in the dynamic processes of collecting, repackaging and disseminating information in various formats;
- improve the professional standards and status of the disciplines in the media science.
Admission Requirements
Applicantts must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of Moi University as stipulated in the statutes and will be selected on the basis of their performance in the following cluster subjects in KCSE: English or Kiswahili, Mathematics, best remaining subject in group (iii) and best remaining in group (iv) or group (vi).
Admission may also be granted to candidates who meet minimum entrance requirements of the University and who are holders of a relevant diploma qualifications in media studies or related field, as long as the diploma qualification has been obtained with credit or distinction. Such candidates may be admitted directly into second year of study. Those with pass grade will be admitted to the first year study.
Admission may be granted to applicants with 'A' level qualifications of two (2) principal passes and a subsidiary pass as well as credit pass grade in 'O' level in English or Kiswahili and Mathematics. Such candidates may be admitted directly into second year of study.
Admission may also be granted to candidates with equivalent alternative qualifications to a, b and c above on the recommendation of the department subject to the approval of the senate.
The duration of the B.Sc. in Media Science degree programme shall normally extend over eight semesters (four academic years).
In the first year, students are introduced to media science, follow university common courses and take other elective courses to deepen their knowledge in other disciplines. In the second to fourth year, students will take media science courses, and common university courses. Students are required to undergo an eight-week practical attachment in a media institution during their long vacation following the end of the third academic year.
