MASTER OF SCIENCE IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES

Introduction
Information provision in Kenya is evolving rapidly through the establishment and development of libraries and information centres in both the public and private sectors, industry, commerce, business and non - governmental organizations. There is need therefore, for information specialists who understand the complexities of information generation, who can effectively manage information resources, provide and develop quality services, teach and undertake research.

Objectives
The aims of the programme are to:

Provide theoretical and practical education in those areas of library and information studies which are undergoing rapid conceptual change, which are of key importance to information management and are particularly relevant to Kenya.
Produce information specialists who understand the complexities of information generation, who can provide and develop quality information service and can fill senior positions in the profession, for teaching and research.

The graduate programme therefore concentrates on issues in communication of information, its storage and retrieval, and information resources, systems and services in specific subject areas. A practical project is included. Emphasis is placed on problem solving, synthesis of knowledge, ability to experiment and adapt to change and the development of inquisitive and original thinking.
