Records and archives are key sources underpinning public service delivery, accountability, transparency and good governance in society. The Master of Philosophy in Information Sciences (Records and Archives Management) seeks to provide education and training to recordkeeping professionals to enable them manage Kenya's records/information/knowledge sources for sustainable socio-economic and political development.
The Master of Philosophy in Information Sciences (Records and Archives Management) will place emphasis on problem solving, synthesis of knowledge, adapting to change, inquisitive and original thinking. It will concentrate on issues related to the management of records in paper and electronic formats throughout their continuum.
Aim of the Programme
The aim of the programme is to provide students with advanced education and training in the theory and practice of records and archives management.
Objectives of the Programme
The Master of Philosophy in Information Sciences (Records and Archives Management) seeks to:
Enable students acquire knowledge and skills in records and archives management through the study of core and inter-disciplinary courses;
Provide students with theoretical knowledge and skills through teaching, practice, consultancy, research and publication in records and archives management field and its related disciplines;
Provide students with relevant recordkeeping knowledge and skills for socio-economic development, public service delivery and the attainment of United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and
Produce graduates capable of managing records and archives in both public and private sectors for social-economic and political development.
The common university regulations for the Degree of Master of Philosophy of Moi University shall apply.
The following candidates are eligible for registration:
Holders of at least second class honours degree in Information Sciences or related area from Moi University or any other university recognized by Moi University Senate.
Holders of a postgraduate diploma in information sciences from Moi University or any other university approved by the Moi University Senate.
The full-time programme shall take twenty four months and extends over four semesters leading to the award of Master of Philosophy in Information Sciences (Records and Archives Management).
The first year, semester one and two is devoted to coursework, to developing a research proposal and to the practical project.
Second year semester one is devoted to thesis work while semester two is devoted to thesis work and coursework.
The coursework shall consist of core courses (coded INS) which are common to all MPhil in Information Science programmes and courses special to the records and archives management discipline (coded RAM). Some of the latter courses are compulsory while others elective.
The method of teaching shall consist of lectures, group discussions, case studies, presentations, video-shows and visits.
The common university regulations for MSc degree shall apply.
Except for the thesis (INS 804) and the practical project (INS 805), each INS or RAM course shall be examined by continuous assessment and examination. The continuous assessment shall constitute 40% and the final examination 60% of the total mark.
Work for continuous assessment shall consist of seminar papers, essays, tests or practical assignments.
